Mental Health Support, Stability, and a Fresh Start

Frederick’s Story

Frederick E.

Frederick E. spent more than two years without a home, not knowing where he would sleep or whether he would feel welcome when he stayed with friends.

“Just being homeless, not knowing where you’re going to sleep,” he said. “Even people looking at you certain ways, saying certain things to you. People not really wanting you there.”

Now 25, Frederick is rebuilding his life with the support of CaringWorks’ supportive housing program. He has a stable place to live, is preparing to begin CDL training, and says he’s focused on building a future for himself.

“My goal is to be on the road,” he said. “I want to start making enough money so I can buy a house.”

Frederick was connected to CaringWorks through a therapist he has worked with since childhood while navigating longstanding mental health challenges. Even during the years he experienced homelessness, he continued attending therapy — something he says helped him navigate both his mental health challenges and the instability in his life.

“I was already like, I need to find something for me to do,” he said. “This can’t be my life.”

Frederick says continuing therapy through some of the hardest years of his life made a significant difference.

“It’s actually had a great impact on me,” he said. “It keeps my head level.”

He also credits the support he has received through CaringWorks’ monthly community meetings, where clients can connect with staff and other residents while accessing resources and support. Frederick says the meetings helped him stay encouraged as he worked toward stability.

“They have a job program,” he said. “They helped me get a job.”

He says having stable housing changed everything. Without a permanent place to stay, holding a job felt nearly impossible.

“If I were homeless, there’s no telling where I would be,” he said. “But I got my apartment, I know exactly where I’m at, I could make it to work every day.”

Since entering the program, Frederick has earned certifications and is preparing to begin CDL school. He also says his relationship with his mother has improved over time.

“We have a great relationship now,” he said. “I matured.”

Today, Frederick hopes others who are struggling with mental health challenges know they do not have to carry those burdens alone.

“It’s okay to let it out. It’s okay to talk,” he said. “Don’t hold it in.”

He also hopes people think differently about homelessness and the circumstances that can lead someone there.

“You never know what position got them there,” he said, “and you never know what position you could be in tomorrow.”
