Celebrating Health and Recovery at the Peer Cafe
At CaringWorks, we believe in empowering individuals on their journey to stability and well-being. In June we demonstrated this by hosting a Men’s Health Month/Father’s Day event at our new Peer Cafe, a space designed to foster community and personal growth among our clients.
The event was hosted for the men of CaringWorks’ RISE-Atlanta program—under the leadership of Program Manager, Kerry-Dean Nugent—for a time of connection and inspiration. RISE Atlanta serves single adults across properties throughout the city of Atlanta, and it’s one of the largest programs in CaringWorks’ portfolio.
CaringWorks Care Coordinator Antonio Tigue was the featured speaker, sharing his powerful testimony about his experience with addiction and recovery.
“I know firsthand the challenges that these guys have gone through,” said Antonio, who will soon celebrate 10 years of being clean. “I tell them that the longer they stay on this path of recovery, the more they realize that it’s not just about surviving—it’s about finally living.”
His message about the long-term benefits of recovery resonated with the group, leading to a discussion where others shared their best coping skills, and one client shared a poem he wrote, “The Journey,” which was a testament to his own path to recovery.
CaringWorks Care Coordinators handed out “fact packs” filled with information on men’s whole health, essential resources, and Father’s Day gifts. The men also enjoyed a low country boil prepared by the CaringWorks team, and watched the featured film, “The Harder They Fall.”
The Peer Cafe, a recent addition to CaringWorks, was the perfect backdrop for this event.
“This is a place where our clients have a safe, healthy and welcoming environment to connect with staff and peers, and access resources,” said Kemba Cook, Certified Peer Specialist at CaringWorks who spearheaded the creation of the Peer Cafe. “Our team is excited about the potential this space has in supporting our clients on their path to self-sufficiency.”
