Back to School: From Homelessness to Honors

Client Spotlight: Roxsand B.

At CaringWorks, we believe that everyone deserves the stability of a home and the opportunity to achieve their goals, regardless of their past circumstances. CaringWorks client Roxsand B. illustrates how—with the right support—goals are well within reach. A 37-year-old single mother who has endured past trauma, Roxsand recently earned her high school diploma, proving that it’s never too late to build the future you deserve.

Her path hasn’t been easy. Before being connected to CaringWorks, Roxsand and her young daughter faced the harsh realities of homelessness.

“It was very stressful. We went from shelter to shelter, place to place, street to street. I was having major depression during that time.”

Then, a lifeline. Roxsand connected with CaringWorks, and everything began to change. She finally got a home of her own after several years of being in and out of homelessness.

“I was very happy when they told me they had a place for me. I was very grateful and thankful.”

With the stability and safety of a home for her and her daughter, Roxsand gained confidence.

“For a minute, I lost myself and I had to remind myself that I am somebody,” she said. “I told myself; things will get better. I will succeed. I will be successful.

Roxsand did succeed. Not only did she obtain her high school diploma, but she graduated with honors. And now, Roxsand is ready for her next chapter. With a passion for helping people, she is planning to pursue a career in nursing.  But that’s not all – she’s also cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit, with a dream of launching her own coffee business.

Roxsand’s journey illustrates why programs like CaringWorks are vital. CaringWorks does much more than provide housing; we help clients set goals and empower them to achieve them.

“They give you a chance to be more responsible, paying for things on your own, getting back on track,” she said.

Roxsand’s biggest motivation? Her 11-year-old daughter.

“I want my daughter to have better. I pray over my child, and I tell her to get the best education she can get and that she can be successful. I tell her, ‘You can do it.’”

Thanks to help from CaringWorks, Roxsand is building a better life for herself and inspiring a bright future for her daughter.
