Finding Stability after 13 Years of Homelessness

Tracey’s Story

For almost 13 years, Tracey S. experienced homelessness — a time she describes simply as “very scary.” During those years, she moved between different living situations, often staying in her car while struggling to maintain stability.

Her path forward began when she was receiving care at Grady Hospital and was connected to CaringWorks.

“I met the right people at the right time,” she said.

Through CaringWorks, Tracey was able to move into a one-bedroom apartment — her first stable home in years. The impact was immediate.

“I was feeling… grateful. I was so thankful that someone was willing to help me… being home again in my own place,” she said.

Having a permanent address also helped her take critical steps toward long-term stability, including reapplying for Social Security benefits. Beyond housing, she received practical support such as furniture, food assistance, and help with utilities. She also participated in meetings focused on life skills and maintaining a household — services she found especially valuable.

Tracey says that staying engaged in the many programs and services available through CaringWorks was key.

“I wanted to do whatever I needed to,” she said.

Stable housing also helped strengthen her relationships with her children and grandchildren. Having a place to call her own meant she could reconnect in ways that had not been possible before.

After about three years in the CaringWorks program, Tracey recently moved into her own independent housing. She describes this new chapter simply: “It’s been wonderful.”

Now, her focus is on maintaining stability and building routine.

“Now I’m just looking forward to living a normal life again,” she said.

The change has also had a significant impact on her well-being.

“For my mental health, it eased the burden. It eased a real weight off me… for my stability, safety,” she said. “It’s wonderful for me.”

Looking back, Tracey encourages others facing similar challenges to stay hopeful and remain open to support.

“Stay positive, keep your head up… focus on the goal… do the work. People are here to help,” she said.

Today, she is focused on maintaining her independence and continuing forward. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude to those who supported her along the way.

“I just want to thank CaringWorks for always being supportive and helping me get to where I am today,” she said.
